I first came to chiropractic at the age of 18, after 5 years of debilitating migraines and loss of vision in my left eye. I missed a week of my life every month for 5 years with the headache and severe pain. I could not stand the light or any noise at all. It was awful and could strike at any time. It was only getting worse, and I could no longer take the medicine that they were prescribing, too much to swallow, and very little use. A friend of the family suggested I see her chiropractor, and I have never looked back! After a few sessions and a lot of really good information, I was a new woman! Over the last 30 years I can count on one hand the beginnings of a headache and perhaps one serious migraine after a big emotional time. Nothing in between! My overall health improved, and my energy levels rocketed. I had been considering medicine at the time, as I wanted to study paediatrics, but after my first degree, I knew that chiropractic was for me. A natural and holistic approach to health and healing.
I first studied at University of Toronto, in Geology and English, then transferred to Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. This was my entry into biomechanical medicine. My absolute favourite class was our gross anatomy class, it was a real eye-opener to actually see all of our organs in place and how connected everything was, from the brain straight through to our toes. It was truly awesome. I studied chiropractic at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth. This was where I first spent time watching infants being adjusted, and then in my clinical year, adjusting them myself. It was an amazing time, meeting amazing people from all over the world, some with very strong philosophies of natural health through chiropractic. During my second year, I contracted whooping cough. I was adjusted twice per day and took high dose vitamin C, and within the week it was gone! No medicines, just pure chiropractic, good nutrition, fluids and rest. That was an incredible experience. Since then, I have also experienced the benefit and the power of chiropractic after car accidents, a disc herniation, two fabulous pregnancies and two amazing home births. I have experienced just a small portion of what chiropractic can do for us, just by removing the interference in our nervous system and allowing our bodies to function and to heal the way we were meant to heal. Some of my favourite moments since arriving in Cornwall, have been out on Stithians Lake or at Coverack windsurfing, and out on the Helford gig rowing. When the sun is out and a lovely warm south-westerly is blowing, there is no place I would rather be! Life has changed a little since the arrival of Abby and Holly, but the sea still calls, although more to sea swim than much else!.
Our family usually attends the chiropractor for a check-up at least every few weeks, rarely longer, especially as kids are so active and crazy!! They may not always need an adjustment every time, but I like knowing that they are in top form. If in between I find that they are overtired, grumpy and generally not their usual gorgeous selves, it usually means time for an adjustment, as something isn’t quite right (we call it an “attitude adjustment”). At home, our “medicine” cabinet is full of homeopathics, rescue remedy, vitamins and herbal preparations. Ice in the freezer, hot water bottle in the cupboard. Good clean foods. The best approach I use is to be calm, think about what is happening and how to approach it. Is wait and watch the best thing? Or if they have had a fall and cut, a good clean and patch job! I prefer to use the body’s natural healing ability, watch for any interference, adjust as needed and support with herbs or homeopathy as required. As a mother, I am into the whole food, loads of love and hugs, support and close family and friendships, and good healthy nervous systems idea! Chiropractic has changed my life the life of my children for the better in every way. It is a process of empowering you to become the best you possible: physically, mentally and emotionally. Armed and able to make better decisions and choices in your own life, you are a better parent, co-worker, friend and partner…..community member…..and it goes on. I look forward to meeting you in person and learning how we may be of service to you and your family.
In 2022, I have made the decision to de-register from the General Chiropractic Council in the UK, as I wish to continue to expand my practice. I have been studying and practicing paediatrics and pregnancy care for over 22 years, and have added Nutritional Therapy, Heart Speak, Neuro Emotional Technique, NLP and Heart Math Coaching and Mentoring to my practice. All of this works wonderfully well with chiropractic care, but it does not fall under the auspices of the remit of the GCC. I feel that now is the correct time for me to step away. I will, as I have for the last 22 years, uphold a very high standard of safety, care and training, with continuing professional development (CPD: I average 200 hours per year of the required 30 hours). Integrity and transparency in practice is paramount. The way I practice will not change that much in terms of adjustments and cranio-sacral therapy, and the above is still how I will practice. It is just the name and umbrella organisation that is. I will still be fully insured as per requirements to practice. I will be under the banner of Spinal Health Specialist and Mind-Body Practitioner rather than Chiropractor (as the GCC owns and regulates the use of this name). Please do ask me for more information if you need any clarification.
Dr Francesca Helmore
Chiropractor
Whenever people ask me about why I decided to become a chiropractor, I always say there are a number of reasons. My family have always been adjusted by chiropractors, for as long as I can remember.
Initially this started with my grandfather, who suffered a car accident whereby he sustained damage to his neck, which worsened over time. He was told that there was nothing further conventional medicine could do, and that he would eventually end up in a wheelchair. Being the man he was, he refused to accept this prognosis and followed the recommendation of a GP friend of his, who recommended he try some new thing called ‘chiropractic’. He saw his chiropractor regularly for the rest of his life and never looked back! He was able to continue playing golf (which he loved) well into his 80s and was still up and walking around into his late 90s, before he passed away.
My mother (our wonderful chiropractic assistant, Damelza) has also undergone three hip replacements in her lifetime, which chiropractic has been invaluable in maintaining. Having seen the effect chiropractic can have on a person’s life, I knew that I wanted to help people in the same way previous chiropractors had helped my family so invaluably.
Being Cornish born and bred, I have also always been a lover of the countryside, spending my days riding my horse and walking our family dogs! Becoming a chiropractor has opened the door for me to progress my education to include chiropractic care for animals, which I always knew I wanted to integrate into my daily life. This is going to be my next endeavour and adventure! During my final internship year at university, I was also fortunate enough to be afforded a paediatric placement where I spent several weeks just adjusting babies and young children. I found this so rewarding and I am beyond excited to be able to further my knowledge under Maryellen’s wing.
In my spare time, when not out exploring with my mare, Grace, I love to fly and found a passion while at university, for aerial yoga. It’s such a good full-body workout and really highlights to me where my strengths, weaknesses and imbalances are – so I then know when and where I need to be adjusted!
Having graduated from AECC University College in 2023, I was fortunate enough to land a job in Wiltshire for my first year in practice, where I gained a great deal of experience. However, the universe has now offered me the opportunity to return home to my roots, family and friends, and to work in such a beautiful, holistic and natural clinic, with my horse being kept down the road. I feel very blessed to become part of the team and can’t wait to meet you all!
Dana Exell
Practice Manager/CA
I first met Maryellen back in 2004 when my Mum became a patient of hers due to ongoing back and neck issues along with headaches, but it wasn’t until the birth of my second daughter that my own personal journey into chiropractic care began. My daughter wasn’t reaching her milestones and at that time we knew something was different with her but no one was listening. I took her along to see Maryellen and haven’t looked back since. My daughter was born with a rare syndrome and various other medical/physical disabilities however at the beginning her outlook from various health professionals was bleak but with Maryellen’s help, advice, chiropractic care and knowledge she has grown into a young lady who has achieved more than we could have hoped for and proven us all wrong in many ways. Over the past 15 years my whole family now receive regular adjustments and we wouldn’t be without them. Chiropractic care has been beneficial to us all, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well.
Damelza Storbeck
Assistant (CA)
My name is Damelza, and I am Cornish born and bred. I live in Porthleven, and I’ve spent most of my working life as a teacher in Primary Education, although I spent 8 years working as Operations Manager for a holiday letting company, and also ran the Harbour Market in Porthleven.
Six years ago I returned to education part time as a teaching assistant and Trauma Informed Practitioner.
I have a daughter of whom I’m very proud, she graduated as a chiropractor last year and is joining us here at Westcountry Family Wellness. My spare time is filled with walking my dog and looking after and riding my horses, who keep me stretched financially but enrich my life in so many other ways!
I have had experience of the positive power of chiropractic since the 1980’s when my dad started receiving regular treatment having been told he was destined to see his life out in a wheelchair after a neck injury. It kept him fit and healthy for the rest of his life, no wheelchair required, until he died at the age 98,two years ago.
My first treatment came following my first hip replacement when I was 40 and I can’t imagine life without regular adjustments to keep my body working at optimum levels.
Sadie
The meet & greet practice pup!
Sadie was born in 2016 and within months decided to come join us when Maryellen is in session, she is very friendly and will usually come to greet you with a sniff and a waggy tail and occasionally will bring you her ball to gently play her favourite game of fetch. When Sadie isn’t greeting our patients or sleeping her favourite hobbies are running, learning new tricks, swimming as far out as she can, meeting other doggos and playing at the beach of course– with any of her most favoured tennis balls and preferably in the sea!!!
